Pharmacy profession urged to champion trainee wellbeing

A leading charity is calling on the pharmacy profession to champion trainee wellbeing.

The profession’s independent charity is encouraging pharmacy employers, training providers and pharmacy professionals to champion trainee wellbeing as part of its Trainee ACTNow campaign, which has been taking place this week.

Designed specifically for trainee pharmacists starting their foundation training year, Trainee ACTNow provides free, practical mental health and wellbeing support to help trainees navigate the challenges of their first year in the profession. This year’s campaign focuses on three areas particularly relevant to trainees as they settle into their new roles: getting the most from the trainee year, financial wellbeing, and thriving in a new team. Resources will include practical guidance, wellbeing advice and insights from those who have experienced the trainee year themselves.

Danielle Hunt, Chief Executive of Pharmacist Support, commented: “Starting the trainee year is a significant transition and, while it’s an exciting time, it can also bring new pressures and uncertainty. We want trainees to know that looking after their wellbeing is part of building a healthy and sustainable career in pharmacy.”

Trainees who sign up to Pharmacist Support’s free e-newsletter will receive the campaign resources, including a Trainee Mental Health and Wellbeing Digital Pack, as well as ongoing wellbeing support and relevant resources throughout their trainee year and beyond. Pharmacist Support added it is grateful to campaign sponsors, Boots and the Pharmacists’ Defence Association (PDA), for its continued support.

Danielle added: “It’s also important for employers, supervisors and colleagues to recognise the role they can play in supporting trainee wellbeing. A simple conversation or sharing a resource like Trainee ACTNow can make a real difference and help trainees feel supported from day one.”
